How to Break Into Cybersecurity from Nigeria in 2026

I get this question almost every week: "Nate, how do I start a cybersecurity career in Nigeria?" Having done it myself — from a computer science student at NOUN to a dual-role SOC analyst and law enforcement intelligence analyst — here is my honest answer.

Step 1: Get the Right Entry-Level Certifications

Forget CISSP and CISM for now — those are for experienced professionals. Start here:

  • CompTIA Security+ or CBTP (Certified Blue Team Practitioner) — The CBTP from SecOps Group is an excellent, affordable certification that tests real blue team knowledge. I scored 93% and it opened doors immediately.
  • Google Cybersecurity Certificate (Coursera) — Free with financial aid. Covers fundamentals well. Good starting point.
  • TryHackMe / Hack The Box — These are not certifications but are the best hands-on learning platforms available. Recruiters notice TryHackMe profiles.

Step 2: Build a GitHub Portfolio

Theory without proof means nothing. Build at least 3 projects on GitHub: a password strength checker in Python, a basic log analysis script, and a documented SOC case study (even a simulated one). Your GitHub profile is your portfolio — treat it that way.

Step 3: Where to Find Remote Jobs from Nigeria

  • LinkedIn — Set location to "Remote" and filter for "Entry level SOC Analyst"
  • Upwork — Cybersecurity consulting gigs for beginners exist here
  • Indeed.com / Glassdoor — Search "remote SOC analyst" globally
  • CyberSecJobs.com and InfoSecJobs.net — Niche job boards
  • Networking on LinkedIn — Comment on security posts, connect with hiring managers, share your own content

Realistic Timeline

6–12 months of consistent effort is enough to land a first remote role or internship if you do the work: one certification every 2 months, 30 minutes on TryHackMe daily, one GitHub project per month, and LinkedIn active weekly. It is not fast, but it is absolutely achievable from Nigeria.

The advantage you have as a Nigerian is real-world context — security threats here are diverse and complex. That experience, documented properly, is valuable globally.
